Michigan State University, East Lansing police departments receive threats against athletic events

Department says letters contain vague threats

EAST LANSING, Mich. – An investigation is underway Friday in East Lansing after several letters were received making general threats against Michigan State University athletic events.

Authorities said the letters do not provide specific information in regards to the event of manner of the threat, but that the school is taking all of the appropriate security measures.

“The safety and well-being of everyone who attends Michigan State athletic events, including fans, student-athletes, coaches and workers, always has been and always will be our first priority,” said athletic director Mark Hollis. “While these threats are general in nature, it’s important to be cautious in every situation.”

Both the MSU and city of East Lansing police departments are investigating.

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety released the following statement:

"DPSS is aware of the information that was shared by the ELPD and MSU PD. We are working with those police departments as well as our local, state and federal partners. We encourage fans attending the game or nearby activities to remain aware of their surroundings and if they see something suspicious or out of place to immediately contact police or security."

The school reminded members of the MSU community to always remain vigilant and to be aware of their surroundings.

The Spartans play the Wolverines Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
