Michigan man enters plea in roommate's pellet rifle slaying

Ovid man to be sentenced May 7 for accidentally killing roommate with pellet gun

ST. JOHNS, Mich. – A 19-year-old mid-Michigan man has pleaded no contest in the accidental shooting death of his roommate with a pellet rifle.

The Lansing State Journal reports Monday that Aaron Feliu, of Ovid, faces a May 7 sentencing in Clinton County Circuit Court in St. Johns.

Records show he entered his plea to manslaughter last week. Feliu had been charged with second-degree murder.

An autopsy determined that 18-year-old David Grant was shot in the back and died in December of internal bleeding. He initially appeared to be having trouble breathing after smoking synthetic marijuana.

Defense attorney Ron Zawacki said Monday that Feliu "didn't intend to hurt his friend" and "is devastated by what happened."

A manslaughter conviction carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
