LONG BEACH, Calif. – A man was arrested Monday hours after a 63-year-old woman was beaten to death with an electric Bird scooter, according to police in Long Beach, California.

The victim, Rosa Hernandez, was walking down a sidewalk about 12:30 p.m. when someone assaulted her, investigators said. At one point, her attacker reportedly picked up the motorized scooter and used it to bludgeon the woman. Hernandez died at the scene before officers arrived, according to officials.

At the crime scene, a scooter broken in two pieces was seen lying on top of the woman's body, reports KNBC.

It is unclear what provoked the attack. Investigators do not believe Hernandez and her attacker knew each other.

Following the attack, officers began searching for a man with facial hair wearing dark pants, a dark hoodie and bright red shoes. A suspect matching that description was taken into custody about 5 p.m., officials said.

The man was booked on murder charges and was being held on $2 million bail. The suspect's identity was not immediately released.

Hernandez was described as a friendly woman who knew everyone.

"It's sad because I feel for her husband," a neighbor told KNBC. "They've been together and lived next door for a very long time, so he's not going to have his wife anymore."

A GoFundMe campaign was created on behalf of the Hernandez family to help cover unplanned funeral expenses. As of Tuesday morning it had raised nearly $1,300 of a $20,000 goal.

Bird expressed their condolences in a statement to the Los Angeles Times, saying, "Our hearts and thoughts go out to the victim and her family. We will work with local law enforcement to help with the investigation into this tragedy."
