Ortonville double shooting suspect on suicide watch at Oakland County Jail

Homeowner ends manhunt after finding suspect in his SUV

ORTONVILLE, Mich. – A man suspected of shooting two people Tuesday night in Ortonville is on suicide watch at the Oakland County Jail.

For nearly 24 hours the small town in northern Oakland County became the center point for an all-out manhunt. Sheriff's deputies searched wooded areas and around homes for 34-year-old Michael Joseph Quigley. Police believe he shot his estranged wife and her friend in their heads before taking off on foot and forcing a lockdown of the entire community.

Schools and libraries were closed as residents stayed worried, wondering when and where Quigley would surface.

Finally, one Ortonville man brought the search to and end Wednesday evening when he noticed the windows on his parked SUV were foggy.

"I was pulling down the driveway," the man said. "I saw the windows were fogged up. I stopped to check it out and he was under a blanket in the back."

The homeowner said he pulled Quigley out of the car and called 911. He pulled out his own gun before opening the car door.

"I had him on the ground," he said. "I stayed on the phone with 911 and within minutes the SWAT team came out of the woods and took it from there."

Investigators continue to talk to and question everyone involved. It appears Quigley and his estranged wife were going through a nasty divorce. Oakland County Sheriff's Cpt. Gary Miller said Quigley was not happy about his wife's new friend.

The estranged couple have four children together. The man who was shot has a 3-year-old daughter who was inside the apartment when the shooting happened. She was not injured.

The two shooting victims both suffered gunshot wounds to their heads. They are expected to survive their injuries.
