Police investigating explosion at Waves restaurant in St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – Police are trying to figure out what exploded outside of a St. Clair Shores restaurant Wednesday morning.

Employees at Waves on Jefferson Avenue first thought a transformer had blown when they heard a bang at 9:42 a.m., before they saw smoke and a crater the size of a beach ball outside.

An employee at Waves said there were metal pieces, but no signs of fireworks.

“I really just hope it was somebody fooling around with an extra firecracker or gunpowder from July 4 because that's what you smelled,” said Geoff Cole, the director of sales at Waves.

No one was hurt in the explosion.

Surveillance video showed a man in a silver or white Chevrolet throw something out the truck window moments before the explosion. Police are watching the footage as they try to figure out what blew up.

Anyone with information should call police at 586-445-5300.
