On Wednesday, Newton said it was "funny to hear a female talk about routes" when asked a question by Jourdan Rodrigue, a female sportswriter for the Charlotte Observer.

A video of his response made its rounds on social media, and the football star received angry reactions to a comment some viewed as sexist.

In his apology, Newton said he understood that his word choice was "extremely degrading and disrespectful to women."

He went on to say it was not his intention and said he sincerely apologizes to those who may have taken offense to what he said.

Newton also mentioned that he has learned a lesson after losing sponsors and fans.

According to The Associated Press, Dannon Co., which makes yogurt, cut ties with Newton after the comment. He was a spokesperson for the company.

Spokesperson Michael Neuwirth released a statement saying Dannon was "shocked and disheartened" at the former league MVP's behavior and comments toward the reporter.
