DETROIT - The Wayne County Commission is looking for a showdown with Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
The commission is telling her to take them to court if she wants to keep the audit report on the halted jail project secret.
All anybody wants to know is what exactly happened at the new Wayne County jail project that is $100 million over budget.
The Wayne County Commission is fighting with Worthy over whether they can get at this audit report telling them exactly what happened.
The issue may now be heading to court
County commission chairman Gary Woronchak issued a resolution asking Worthy how she has the power to deny access to the jail audit.
"If the commission did nothing the commission would in fact be accepting that premise that the prosecutor has that authority and I don't accept that premise," said Woronchak .
Tomorrow the commission will take it up it saying the commission, "Requests that Prosecutor Kym Worthy immediately authorize Wayne County legislative auditor general Willie Mayo to release the jail audit report; or, obtain a court order to prevent the release of the jail audit report."
"I don't want to set a precedent hear that the prosecutors can tell the auditor general to not release a report. If she wants to go to court and explain to a court why it's necessary to hold that report back then we expect that of course," said Woronchak.
The prosecutor's response, "At this point we have not received the completed auditor general's report. We have indicated to the commission, that once it is received we will take 30 days to review it to determine if a redacted copy can be released, this time period is more than reasonable considering that it has taken many month for the auditor general to compile the report."
One of the issues the commission is grappling with is what to do with the property?
Rod Meloni: Wayne Co. Jail and your right to know.
Local 4 has learned that only two companies are left in the running to buy the property --there is still a need here is for state money and no one is sure where that is coming from.
There is still a lot to be worked out in the days and weeks to come.
