FERNDALE, Mich. – Police in Ferndale are investigating after at least seven cars had windows smashed and items stolen from inside overnight.
In the last 24 hours there’s been a rash of larcenies from cars in the area between Woodward Avenue and Pinecrest Drive. Several cars were hit in a church parking lot off of Hazelhurst Street, including Michael Krueger’s year-old Subaru Forester.
“My wife and I were coming home from our cottage up north last night and we said, should we park in the lot or the driveway? Because with all of the construction on our street getting out of our driveway has been a hassle,” Krueger said.
Hazelhurst Street is being repaved and while the concrete cures, there’s no parking allowed on the street. The ends of some residents driveways are also blocked.
“I would imagine if my car was in my driveway they might be less likely to do it since they have to go so close to the house, but who knows,” Krueger said. “Here, it’s like a car lot!”
People living on Hazelhurst Street say the repaving project will be continuing for another week. Some will still have to park in the lot and are hoping the vandals don’t come back.
“When I came outside to go to work, I was thankful my car wasn’t damaged,” said Brian Baby who lives on Hazelhurst Street. “But I had to tell my neighbor his 3-day old car was broken into.”
Police say they have no leads and are hoping anyone with information will come forward.
