University of Detroit Mercy is once again ranked among the nation’s best universities. For 2026, the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse ranked UDM No. 36 this year, up seven spots from the 2025 rankings when Detroit Mercy was ranked No. 43.
“UDM is making a difference in the lives of our students, our neighborhood, our hometown of Detroit and our nation,” said Detroit Mercy President Donald B. Taylor.
Unlike traditional rankings that focus on admissions selectivity, the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse rankings emphasize student outcomes, highlighting Detroit Mercy’s success in preparing graduates for meaningful careers. The university also posted strong gains in key areas, including social mobility, student experience and graduate salaries -- further proof of its commitment to student success.
Detroit Mercy’s rankings out of 584 schools:
- Social mobility: No. 27
- Student experience: No. 309 (up from 411 last year)
- Best salaries: No. 52
- Best value: No. 103
The rankings also conclude that Detroit Mercy is:
- No. 1 ranked private university in Michigan.
- Second-highest ranked university in Michigan.
- No. 3 ranked Catholic university in the U.S.
Detroit Mercy’s dedication to delivering value is reflected in a recent Georgetown University report showing alumni earn an estimated $2.1 million more over their lifetimes compared to those without a college degree.
Record enrollment reflects growing momentum
This upward trajectory is attracting more students than ever. Detroit Mercy welcomed a record 672 new freshmen this fall, surpassing last year’s enrollment. Transfer students also increased, contributing to a total student body of nearly 5,800 full- and part-time learners. The university’s rising second-year retention rate of 84.2% speaks to the supportive environment and quality education students experience.
“This is a powerful affirmation of the university’s commitment to each student’s wellbeing and success -- both in their careers and in their lives,” said Debbie Stieffel, Detroit Mercy’s vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. “This recognition reflects the tireless dedication of faculty and staff who believe deeply in our students’ potential.”
Students like senior biology major Alexandria Jarbo feel the impact firsthand.
“Seeing Detroit Mercy ranked 36th in the nation makes me really proud to be a student here,” she said. “It reflects how much the professors and community truly care about our success, and it reminds me that I made the right choice coming to UDM.”
Innovative programs for today’s workforce
Detroit Mercy’s growth is fueled by a commitment to academic innovation and drive to meet the evolving needs of students and the community. This fall, the university launched the School of Optometry, welcoming its first class of a rigorous seven-year Doctor of Optometry program designed to address the region’s growing demand for eye care professionals.
The College of Health Professions also introduced the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, offering new bachelor’s degrees in health science and sports and exercise sciences to prepare students for careers in the expanding healthcare sector.
In addition, the School of Law debuted Michigan’s first online J.D. program, which provides flexible, mostly asynchronous learning for aspiring legal professionals balancing busy lives.
The School of Dentistry also expanded with a new campus in Vermont, welcoming its inaugural class and broadening access to dental education.
Looking forward to 150 years of impact
As Detroit Mercy approaches its 150th anniversary in 2027, the university continues to build on its mission of serving students and the Detroit community through meaningful education and opportunity.
“I don’t think there has ever been a more exciting time to be part of University of Detroit Mercy and our great city,” Taylor said. “You can feel the energy on campus, in our neighborhood, downtown and throughout Southeast Michigan. Achieving a No. 36 rank in the U.S. is not only great for UDM, it’s great for our city and indeed the entire state.”
