One of Detroit’s beloved holiday traditions is back. The Downtown Detroit Markets return to Cadillac Square Nov. 12 through Jan. 4, bringing with it the sights, sounds and entrepreneurial energy that have made the pop-up village a signature part of Detroit’s winter season.

Now in its eighth year, the markets are funded by the Gilbert Family Foundation, managed by the Downtown Detroit Partnership and supported by Bedrock. What began as a seasonal experiment has grown into a model for urban revitalization and small business development -- one that has supported more than 145 local businesses and generated nearly $6 million in sales since its launch.

This year’s lineup features 18 local vendors, the majority of whom are Detroit-based and BIPOC- or female-owned. Each business receives $3,000 in direct support -- split between the holiday season and post-season assistance -- along with mentorship and financial guidance through TechTown Detroit.

More than a market

For the Gilbert Family Foundation, the Downtown Detroit Markets represent more than a festive shopping destination. They’re part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Detroit’s small business ecosystem and foster inclusive economic growth.

“The Downtown Detroit Markets have become a holiday tradition,” said Darnell Adams, Vice President of Detroit Community Initiatives for Gilbert Family Foundation. “It’s about more than shopping -- it’s about uplifting Detroit’s entrepreneurs and celebrating the heart and hustle of our city.”

That focus on long-term empowerment has helped transform the markets into a launchpad for small businesses. Many past participants have gone on to open brick-and-mortar locations or expand their operations across the region.

Tied to Small Business Saturday

The markets open just in time for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29, aligning with the nationwide effort to support local enterprises during the peak holiday shopping season. For Detroit’s entrepreneurs, the timing couldn’t be better.

By connecting the markets to this national initiative, organizers hope to draw more attention to the importance of shopping local and to the role that programs like this play in creating pathways to economic mobility for Detroiters.

What to expect at Cadillac Square

Visitors to this year’s markets will find a dynamic mix of 18 vendors offering locally made gifts, fashion, art and treats -- all reflecting Detroit’s creative energy.

Among the returning vendors is Asher & Arnold, known for its children’s toys and holistic family wellness products. One new vendor this year is Mimidae Beverage Company, a woman-owned brand bringing inventive, Detroit-made beverages to the mix.

Just steps away, the Cadillac Lodge will once again offer a cozy, family-friendly space with festive food, warm drinks and the kind of nostalgic holiday atmosphere that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

Creating community through commerce

Beyond the twinkle lights and holiday cheer, the markets have a measurable impact on Detroit’s downtown and small business landscape.

“The Downtown Detroit Markets are more than a destination; they’re a celebration of local creativity, community and entrepreneurial spirit,” said David Cowan, Chief Public Spaces Officer at Downtown Detroit Partnership. “Each year, Cadillac Square transforms into a festive space that delights visitors and fuels the dreams of Detroit’s small business owners. We’re proud to be part of this seasonal tradition that energizes our public spaces and keeps the heart of the city beating with excitement and opportunity.”

The markets help drive foot traffic downtown during the winter months and create a shared space where Detroiters and visitors alike can experience the city’s evolving small business scene firsthand.

Building a model for sustainable growth

The Downtown Detroit Markets have become a blueprint for urban economic development, combining exposure, mentorship and financial support to give small businesses the boost they need to grow.

That combination has proven powerful. Alumni vendors have reported increased visibility, expanded product lines and stronger financial footing after participating in the program. The benefits ripple outward, creating jobs, strengthening neighborhoods and contributing to Detroit’s broader economic vitality.

How to visit

The Downtown Detroit Markets runs Nov. 12 through Jan. 4 at Cadillac Square, across from Campus Martius Park. Shoppers can explore locally made goods, enjoy seasonal food and drinks at Cadillac Lodge, and celebrate the holidays in one of Detroit’s most inclusive and festive outdoor destinations.

Bundle up, head downtown and support Detroit’s small businesses, because every purchase made at the markets helps strengthen the city’s economy and the community behind it.
