Lions claim Dwight Freeney off waivers from Seahawks

Defensive end reunited with coach Jim Caldwell

The Detroit Lions claimed seven-time Pro Bowler Dwight Freeney off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, adding a veteran piece to their defensive line for the stretch playoff run.

The move reunites Freeney with coach Jim Caldwell. The two won the 2006 Super Bowl together in Indianapolis.

The Seahawks waived Freeney on Tuesday, a move ESPN reported as "surprising." Seattle had signed the 17-year veteran in Week 8 after Cliff Avril was injured. Freeney recorded three sacks in four games for the Seahawks. 

The Lions waved wide receiver Jace Billingsley to make room for Freeney. 

Detroit is 6-4 on the season with a key game Thursday against the NFC-North-leading Minnesota Vikings.
