U.S. team defeats Canada to win gold at 2021 World Juniors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It was a stunning victory Tuesday night as the U.S. team beat Canada to win gold at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Local 4′s Jamie Edmonds caught up with the Michigan players on that team as they returned to campus. There was not a huge welcome party back in Ann Arbor due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was pure joy on the ice in Edmonton and later in the locker room. The U.S. team shut out and stunned the favored Canadians for gold at the competition. Now, four of those gold medals are back in Ann Arbor.

To even have the tournament, a bubble was set up with strict rules. Players had to quarantine for two weeks before going and then stay in their rooms for four days when they got there.

The players said the special circumstances of last year bonded them together even more.
