Hurricane Milton rips roof off of MLB stadium in Tampa Bay

Field, stands visible through roof

TAMPA BAY, Mich. – Hurricane Milton ripped the roof off of Tropicana Field, the home of the Rays in Tampa Bay.

The hurricane made landfall overnight Wednesday into Thursday, leaving a trail of damage on Florida’s west coast and millions of people without power.

Tropicana Field was going to be used by emergency workers in the storm’s aftermath, but strong winds completely destroyed the dome’s paneled roof.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management said it was “establishing a 10,000-person base camp at Tropicana Field to support ongoing debris operations and post-landfall responders,” according to NBC News.

Tropicana Field was not being used as a shelter.

Winds from Milton reached over 100 mph, and the storm surge was expected to be catastrophic in some areas.

Tropicana’s field and stands could be seen in drone footage from above the stadium.

The Rays' season ended on Sept. 29, so MLB playoff games are not being played at Tropicana Field this year.
