PITTSBURGH – The Detroit Tigers were the first team to reach 60 wins in the 2025 season, but they have struggled lately, losing eight of their last nine games.

At one point, the Tigers, who are on a two-game losing streak after falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 on July 22, endured a six-game consecutive skid over 11 days.

Melton, who is also the Tigers’ third-ranked prospect, was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft out of San Diego State.

The 24-year-old has impressed in the minors, pitching 273 innings across 66 games.

Of those innings (39 at Double-A, 36.1 at Triple-A), 63 were starts and three were in relief.

Melton has posted a 3.63 earned run average (ERA) per nine innings, with a 28.1% strikeout rate and a 6.5% walk rate.

This season, Melton has thrown 75 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, compiling a combined 2.99 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 101 strikeouts, and 20 walks.

His walk rate remains strong at 6.4%, and his strikeout rate has increased to 32.4%.

Melton will look to join the Tigers’ rotation alongside Tarik Skubal, Case Mize, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson, and Keider Montero.
