DETROIT – Dan Campbell’s quote about biting kneecaps during his Detroit Lions introductory press conference has reached legendary status, but now we know what his wife, Holly, thought when she heard it.
Local 4’s Karen Drew sat down with Holly Campbell and was going to ask her about a quote he had about her support.
But Holly thought Karen was going to ask about the infamous “kneecaps” comments during his introductory press conference. So, obviously, we had to get her response.
“Did you know he was going to say that?” Karen asked.
“I mean, I knew he was capable of saying that, I definitely did,” she said. “Even for me, it was a lot. I remember when he called me, I was, like, ‘Yeah, that was a lot of body parts. You probably could have stopped at one kneecap.’
“It was even, like, ‘I don’t know if I can watch your press conferences anymore.’”
She said she did understand where he was coming from, though.
“It’s not shocking at all to me that it resonated with Detroit,” Campbell said. “That is who he is.”
Campbell’s podium quotes and locker room speeches have endeared him to Lions fans ever since.
