DETROIT – Holly Campbell, the wife of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, said she thinks it’s more stressful being married to a coach than a player.
Dan and Holly Campbell got married 27 years ago, right before he was drafted. Now, as their 27th NFL season is about to begin, Holly sat down with Local 4’s Karen Drew and talked about the difference between him being a player and a coach.
“Coach’s wife (is more stressful),” Holly said. “It’s 24/7. It’s not that players’ aren’t, but they’re home a lot more, and they have a lot more time off.”
She said their offseason looks a lot different now that Dan has gone from the field to the sideline.
“You go from having this whole offseason where you can do everything -- you can go on vacation together, you can go on vacation with your kids, you can go see your family,” she said. “(As a) coach, really, there’s about a month, but when you’re the head coach, it’s really about two weeks.”
She said Dan never stops working as the head coach.
That work has certainly paid off for Lions fans. When the Campbells arrived the team had only one playoff win in the past 60 years. They had never won the NFC North Division.
Now, they’re back-to-back NFC North champs, and coming off a 15-2 campaign.
