ALLEN PARK, Mich.Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the team’s performance statistically from the Cleveland Browns game “kind of holds true” to what was said the day before.

Campbell noted the third-down conversions, with the Lions going six of 14 compared to the Browns’ three of 14.

Red zone efficiency was also a factor, as Detroit scored three touchdowns while Cleveland scored just one.

Campbell highlighted the turnover ratio, saying, “We were plus two in the turnover ratio. We had two takeaways. We gave one away, but we were up two on that.”

He explained how those turnovers translated into points.

“Really turned that into 10 points. I mean, it’s 17 points, but they were able to net three off of that. But 10-point swing,” Campbell said.

Special teams

Special teams played a big role, especially punter Jack Fox‘s net punting average, which was over 10 yards more than the Browns’.

Return yards were significant, with Kalif Raymond providing a big return for a touchdown and aggressive play all day.

Campbell praised kicker Jake Bates for two big field goals and the field goal protection team for their solid performance.

Defense

On defense, Campbell said, “Our defense was two on sudden change. We had the pick, and they were already in field goal range. Our defense holds, forces a field goal. That’s big.”

Campbell also pointed out a key defensive stop after a failed fourth-down attempt, which led to a punt and the touchdown return by Raymond.

Offense

Offensively and on special teams, the Lions managed to get into field goal range before halftime with no time left, making it a two-score game going into the break.

Campbell emphasized the importance of finding different ways to win.

“The more ways you figure out how to win, how to play the game, how to stay competitive, and find a way to finish it off, you get better and better,” Campbell said.

Game balls

Campbell named several players who stood out, including Aidan Hutchinson, D.J. Reader, Jack Campbell, Alex Anzalone, Kerby Joseph, D.J. Reed Jr., Malcolm Rodriguez, Tyleik Williams, Pat O’Connor, Tyler Lacy, and Al-Quadin Muhammad.

Campbell was especially impressed with Reed’s performance, calling it “lights out” and “unbelievable.”

He also praised the defensive line and offensive players, such as Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Raymond, and Sam LaPorta.

The offensive line was credited for allowing no sacks while producing over 100 yards rushing and containing the opposing defense.

Special teams contributors included Leaf, O’Connor, Grant Stuard, Khalil Dorsey, Trevor Nowaske, and Craig Reynolds.

Campbell said the team found a way to win despite some areas needing improvement, and they are already preparing for their next game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Injury

Regarding Reed’s injury, Campbell said the standout cornerback was “still fighting to make that tackle,” showing his dedication and toughness.

Campbell confirmed Reed will be out “for a while,” but reassured that it is not a season-ending injury.

He discussed the team’s approach to injuries, emphasizing the “next man up” mentality and preparing backups with real reps in practice.

He said players like Dorsey and Rock Ya-Sin are prepared to step in without the team missing a beat.

Regarding Miles Frasier‘s recovery, Campbell said progress is slower than hoped, and it’s unclear if he will return this season.

Cornerbacks

On the cornerback roster, Campbell said they might look for help in practice, mentioning Erick Hallett’s versatility at nickel, corner, and safety positions.

Regarding other injuries, Campbell said Terrion Arnold‘s status is uncertain for this week, but he expects Arnold to return by next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Campbell also mentioned Max may start the practice window soon and praised the medical and training staff for their work.

Team win totals

Campbell explained why he emphasizes the team’s win total in postgame talks.

“The name of the game is winning, and the most important thing, and what can’t ever be lost,” Campbell said.

Campbell said that winning builds confidence and experience, and teams that win multiple games in a season are generally considered good teams.

Reflecting on the team’s resilience, Campbell noted that the players remain focused and locked in on what they can control, despite distractions such as social media and criticism.

He said the core of the team is “very strong” mentally and physically.

Missed connections

Campbell addressed some missed deep connections between Jared Goff and Jameson Williams, attributing it to being “a little bit off” and limited practice reps due to a walkthrough day.

He expressed confidence that the receivers and quarterback will improve with more work.

On special teams, Campbell said he appreciates the impact but hates watching field goal protection mistakes because of how crucial those plays are.

Campbell stressed the importance of focus and technique to prevent game-changing blocks.

When asked if he ever gave up a blocked field goal, Campbell joked, “No, but only by luck.”

He recounted a near-blocked kick involving Julius Peppers, explaining how the kick was missed, but a re-kick was granted due to contact with the kicker.

History

The Lions have played the Bengals 13 times, with Detroit winning three games and the Bengals winning 10 games.

Look for the Lions to seek revenge on a Joe Burrow-less Bengals team led by wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and running back Chase Brown as Detroit looks to extend their winning streak to four consecutive.

Kickoff is at 4:25 p.m.
