What is the NFL trade deadline?

The trade deadline marks the midpoint of the NFL season when teams may no longer make trades.

Can teams still acquire players after the trade deadline?

NFL teams may only acquire new players via free agency or the waiver wire after the trade deadline.

What is the waiver wire?

The waiver wire is a system that allows NFL teams to make a player’s contract -- or, in some cases, the team’s rights to that player -- available to other clubs in the league.

When a team places a player on waivers, the other 31 teams have the opportunity to claim him. If they don’t claim him, they give up their chance to do so.

Can an NFL player prevent a trade from happening?

A player may veto a trade if their contract contains a no-trade clause.

What is a no-trade clause?

In a contract, a no-trade clause allows a player to block or refuse a trade they are part of.

No-trade clauses may also include variations, such as a list of specific teams a player agrees to be traded to, or terms that limit when a team is allowed to trade that player.

When can teams begin to make trades again after the deadline?

Trades in the NFL can resume once the new league year begins—the same day teams can begin signing free agents.

The 2026 league year begins March 11, 2026.
