ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell described the Pittsburgh Steelers as a physical opponent, calling it a battle that requires smart, efficient play.
“They do it the right way. They do it the hard way. And they make you try to earn it at the end of the game,” Campbell said. “We know this will be one of those physical battles. We got to play smart, take care of the football, and be very efficient.”

Campbell expressed respect for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, noting a professional acquaintance but not a close relationship.
“I’ve just got a ton of respect for him. I know what he’s about and the way he goes about his business,” Campbell said.
Discussing the Steelers’ skill players, Campbell highlighted the challenge of defending wide receiver DK Metcalf and versatile running backs like Kenneth Gainwell, who can catch passes out of the backfield.
“It just gives them another element,” Campbell said. “If you’re able to get the running back out and he’s a good route runner, then you get isolated on a linebacker.”
Campbell praised Gainwell’s vision, shifty running style, and receiving ability, as well as quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ accuracy and big targets like Metcalf.
“They’ve got three tight ends that can block and run, and Arthur Smith’s doing a hell of a job running his system,” Campbell said.
Campbell praised quarterback Rodgers for his fast play, accuracy, and quick release.
“He can process it like that, and with a flick of the wrist, the thing is it’s into the receiver’s hands at a perfect location,” Campbell said.
Offensive performances
Regarding recent offensive performances, Campbell noted that some success was due to the opponent’s scheme and to his players’ timely execution.
“We hit at the right time. JMO (Jameson Williams) was outstanding. So was St. (Amon-Ra St. Brown) down in the red zone. It all lined up really well," Campbell said.
Regarding running back David Montgomery’s reduced role, Campbell called him a pro who handles the situation well despite the challenge.
“David is a pro. He goes about his business. I know that’s not easy,” Campbell said. “Every good player wants their chance to help the team win and get some production.”
Campbell discussed strategies to get Montgomery more involved, including specific series and formations designed to create opportunities.
Defense
Campbell also highlighted linebacker Jack Campbell’s value and durability, noting he has taken more reps than anyone on the team.
On defense, Dan acknowledged recent struggles with giving up points and passing yards, which reduce the offense’s margin for error.
“When you struggle to run the ball, to keep up or stay ahead, you have to be perfect in the pass game. We have no margin for error,” Dan said.
Balanced attack
Dan emphasized the importance of balancing the run and pass games to reduce stress on the defense and gain confidence.
He provided an update on offensive guard Christian Mahogany, hopeful for his return soon after a full-speed walk-through.
Dan also addressed challenges with left guard continuity due to injuries, but said the team is doing the best it can.
Regarding offensive lineman Giovanni Manu’s development, Dam stressed the need for practice reps to prepare him for the future.
Dan reflected on the importance of winning one game at a time to build momentum.
“You’ve got to win the first one. We got to win this one to have a chance to win the next one,” Dan said. “It’s one week, one game, and one win. That’s all we can focus on.”
Dan acknowledged the physical nature of upcoming opponents and the attitude required to compete.
Both teams are 8-6 and need to go on a run to have a chance at being in the playoffs as a NFL Wild Card team.
