The game will be played at FC Bayern Munich Stadium in Munich. So far, the date and opponent have not been announced.
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally, and specifically in Munich, for the 2026 season,” Detroit Lions President and CEO Rod Wood said. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s mother, Miriam, is from Cologne, Germany.
“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” St. Brown said. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”
Detroit is coming off a disappointing 9-8 season, missing the playoffs after back-to-back trips in 2024 and 2025.
As the last-place finisher in the NFC North, the Lions will theoretically play a lighter schedule in 2026-27. But since they have nine home games and eight road games, there’s a good chance the trip to Munich will replace a game at Ford Field.
The NFL has greatly expanded its overseas presence in the past decade, playing games at 9 a.m. ET on Sundays.
Detroit last played internationally on Nov. 1, 2015, against the Kansas City Chiefs at Wembley Stadium in England. They also played against the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 26, 2014.
More details about when and who the Lions are playing in Munich should start to surface soon.
