Kody Clemens hits first MLB homer to lead Tigers to another win over D’backs

The Tigers (28-43) have won two in a row and will try to sweep the Diamondbacks (32-41) in the series finale on Sunday. Mantiply had a 0.34 ERA in 26 2/3 innings this year, hadn’t given up a homer since last June, hadn’t given up an extra-base hit all season and hadn’t given up a homer to a left-handed hitter like Clemens in his entire career. But Clemens crushed a ball to deep right, giving the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. Tigers starter Alex Faedo allowed three runs in four innings, his third consecutive start in which he failed to go five. Baez has now homered in three consecutive games and had a hit in eight consecutive games, a span in which he’s gone 12-for-31 (.387 average) with eight extra-base hits. The Tigers (27-43) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, while the Diamondbacks (32-40) have now lost four in a row. Baez is the third shortstop in Tigers’ history to homer in three consecutive games, joining Carlos Guillen (who did so in four straight games in 2007) and Dick McAuliffe (in 1966). Baez’s slam was a no doubter that left the bat at 110 mph and traveled 459 feet, the longest Tigers’ homer measured by Statcast since Jeimer Candelario hit one 467 feet in 2019. Box scoreUp nextThe Tigers and Diamondbacks meet again on Saturday at 10:10 p.m. Tigers rookie right-hander Alex Faedo (1-4, 4.67 ERA) will face Arizona right-hander Zach Davies (2-4, 3.96).

Predicting Tigers’ 2023 rotation with Casey Mize no longer in picture

Tommy John elbow surgery, which Mize will undergo this month, is one of the wonders of modern sports medicine. Tigers will play doubleheader on Wednesday after opener against Pirates is rained out

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers will play a traditional doubleheader on Wednesday after Tuesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates was washed out by rain. The Tigers (7-14) and Pirates (9-13) will play two beginning at 1:10 p.m. at Comerica Park. The doubleheader will mark the start of a difficult stretch for the Tigers, who will play 17 games in a 15-day span. After Wednesday’s games, they must fly to Houston for a four-game series against the Astros. If you had tickets for Tuesday’s game, you can exchange them for any non-Opening Day game in the next 12 months, including Wednesday’s doubleheader.

More than 2 years later, Tigers’ Alex Faedo returns to mound: ‘It was almost euphoric’

Nothing bad happened that day, but the pandemic arrived shortly thereafter, spring training was shut down and although the major leagues eventually played a shortened schedule, all minor league seasons were canceled. Faedo was shipped to the Tigers’ satellite camp in Toledo where he started to feel some arm discomfort. Hinch and pitching coach Chris Fetter weren’t sure what to expect when he arrived for the abbreviated spring training about a week ago. He was ready to throw live batting practice and, on Sunday, return to a real spring training game. (Long after Faedo exited, the Tigers scored four in the ninth to beat the Yankees, 8-7).

Tigers building Mud Hens’ rotation, which will be stocked with youngsters in 2022

He will supplement a Mud Hens’ rotation that will have plenty of young arms. He’ll join three onetime prospects coming back from injury who are very likely to start the season in the Toledo rotation: Lefty Joey Wentz and right-handers Alex Faedo and Rony Garcia. Right-hander Elvin Rodriguez pitched just two innings in Toledo last season, but could be a candidate for a rotation job this spring. Paul Richan, 24, and Garrett Hill, 26, could also find themselves in Toledo before long, if not from Day 1. There’s no guarantee that this year’s Toledo rotation will be better than last year’s group, which was a patchwork of veterans like Pinto, Drew Hutchison, Pedro Payano and Mark Leiter Jr.

As Rule 5 Draft looms, a look at Tigers’ recent roster moves

Right-handed pitcher Alex Lange, the fourth player whose contract was selected by the Tigers last month, might have been the most borderline case. The lost 2020 season has complicated the decisions for many teams, especially for younger prospects or borderline prospects who were left off the 60-man player pool. The Tigers’ 40-man roster is currently full, which means they’ll have to drop someone soon to clear a spot to draft a player. Detroit Tigers pitcher Alex Faedo (75) calls for a clarification of a drill during their first full-squad practice of 2018 spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, on Monday, February 19, 2018. The Tigers and other MLB teams are working out in effort to start their 2020 season in late July.
