New FIFA rules to protect female players' maternity rights

(AP Photo/Alastair Grant)GENEVA โ€“ Female soccer players should soon get their maternity rights protected under new employment rules announced Thursday by FIFA. โ€œThe idea is to protect female players before, during and after childbirth,โ€ FIFA chief legal officer Emilio Garcia said on a conference call. The rules are expected to be approved by the FIFA Council next month and would take effect on Jan. 1. โ€œWe think these rules are part of common sense,โ€ he said of the move, which follow International Labor Organization standards on compensating maternity leave. At least eight weeks of the 14-week minimum maternity leave must be after the player gives birth.

Portman group will bring NWSL to Los Angeles in 2022

Actress Natalie Portman and venture capitalist Kara Nortman lead a group that will bring an expansion National Women's Soccer League team to the Los Angeles area in 2022. Then she and Nortman met Becca Roux, the executive director of the U.S. Women's National Team Players Association. The women also reached out to a local supporters group that has been campaigning to bring a team to Los Angeles. The group is partnering with the LA84 Foundation, a nonprofit formed after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics that promotes youth sports. The official name of the Los Angeles club, and where it will play, are expected to be announced later this year.

Campaigning finds a new normal as door-knocking resumes

In previous campaigns, we would always say organizing, door-knocking is the gold standard," she said. U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone apologized Saturday for the federation's lack of leadership in the fight against racism as she addressed its decision to repeal a policy that required players to stand during the national anthem. We are committed to doing better to help fight racism and discrimination in all its forms, Parlow Cone said. It was the first board meeting Parlow Cone has led as president. The U.S. Womens National Team Players Association also called for an apology from U.S. Soccer and a plan to substantively address racial inequities. Rapinoe kneeled during the anthem at a pair of national team matches in 2016.

US Soccer repeals rule that banned kneeling during anthem

U.S. Soccer's board of directors has voted to repeal a 2017 policy that required national team players to stand during the national anthem, a rule adopted after Megan Rapinoe kneeled in support of Colin Kaepernick. The board made the decision during a conference call, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday. The U.S. Soccer Athletes' Council, which includes current national team players Alex Morgan and Ali Krieger, as well as former players like Landon Donovan, called on U.S. Soccer to also apologize for the policy to foster a "positive relationship to exist going forward." The U.S. Women's National Team Players Association also called for an apology from U.S. Soccer and a plan to substantively address racial inequality. Rapinoe took a knee during the anthem at a pair of national team matches in 2016.

Alex Morgan: Tea-sipping celebration criticism illustrates double standard

She called the criticism a double standard for female and male athletes. "And when I look at sipping a cup of tea, I'm a little taken aback" by the criticism. Turner congratulated Morgan and the USWNT on their win in an Instagram Story on Friday. "Unfortunately, the UK women's football team lost at the World Cup, and of course, I'm incredibly sad," Turner said.

Approximately 100 million cups of tea are drunk by the British each day-- almost 36 billion per year -- according to the UK Tea and Infusions Association. Morgan's celebration was lapped up by some, notably Hillary Clinton: "Congrats to the #USWNT for earning that tea," the 2016 presidential candidate tweeted. Morgan's celebration proved not to be everyone's cup of tea. As the World Cup reaches boiling point, there is still plenty more drama brewing.
