The Owosso Rotary Club, in an effort to broaden knowledge of Black history in Owosso, took this Veterans Day as an opportunity to honor the life of Alexander Johnson, a Black Civil War Veteran who lived and worked in Owosso in the late 1800s. Johnson and two other Black men were three of the only remaining Black residents in Owosso in the 1800s after a group of white residents chased Black residents out of town during a dispute in 1871. Johnson, Walter Toyer and Billy Byerly were not threatened by the group and decided to stay, area historian and Owosso Rotary Club member Tom Cook said. The Civil War veteran was born a slave in Tennessee in 1833 and made his way to Michigan before enlisting to fight in the Civil War and later settling in Owosso, where he owned a downtown barbershop for many years. The club recently adopted a statement to respect diversity and inclusion: “At the Owosso Rotary Club, we have no tolerance for racism.
