Red Wings tighten up defensively, but lose to Stars in OT
The Detroit Red Wings focused on tightening up defensively following a pair of poor performances. Jason Dickinson scored at 1:32 of overtime to lift the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings at American Airlines Center. Dickinson fired in a one-timer from the slot off a pass from John Klingberg after the Red Wings had controlled the puck for the first minute of the OT. Thomas Greiss made 20 saves and is still searching for his first victory as a Red Wing (0-3-1). The Red Wings had a couple of scoring chances on a power play with 4:09 remaining in regulation but could not convert.

The Stars' return comes after 17 players tested positive for COVID-19, even though most were asymptomatic. Their first four scheduled games, all on the road and including an early Stanley Cup Final rematch with Tampa Bay, were postponed. “Right now, listen, we're all ready for a game,” Stars coach Rick Bowness said after practice Thursday at their home arena. Now the Stars are the last team to open the NHL's 56-game, division-only regular season. About 5,000 fans will be allowed for Stars games, well below the hockey capacity of 18,532, though the NBA's Dallas Mavericks are playing their home games there without fans.

The Stars are still Bowness' team. Dallas officially removed the interim tag Thursday and gave the 65-year-old Bowness a two-year contract, making him the franchise's 24th head coach, and ninth since moving to Dallas in 1993. Bowness was 20-13-5 after becoming their interim head coach. The Stars made it to the Stanley Cup final even while dealing with a plethora of significant injuries. FLINT – The Flint Firebirds are providing a pipeline of talent to the Dallas Stars. The Stars used their sixth-round pick (162nd overall) in this year’s NHL draft to select Firebirds forward Evgeniy Oksentyuk. He’s the eighth Firebirds player to be drafted by an NHL in five years. Two years ago, the Stars used their first-round pick (13th overall) to select Ty Dellandrea, who has served as the Firebirds captain the past two years. Nick Caamano (2016), Brent Moran (2014) and Alex Peters (2014) are other players drafted by Dallas who spent time playing for the Firebirds.
