Texas police: Teacher closed propped-open door before attack

The Robb Elementary School teacher who propped open an exterior door that law enforcement said a gunman used to get inside and kill 19 students and two teachers had closed the door but it did not lock, state police said Tuesday. Investigators initially said the teacher had propped the door open before Salvador Ramos, 18, entered the school in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24. Investigators have now determined that the teacher, who has not been identified, propped the door open with a rock, but then removed the rock and closed the door when she realized there was a shooter on campus, said Travis Considine, chief communications officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

'Soft opening' for census door knocking to begin next month

ORLANDO, Fla. Door knocking by census takers at the homes of people who haven't yet responded to the 2020 census is scheduled to start next month with a soft launch," while a previously postponed count of the homeless will take place in September, U.S. Census Bureau officials said Friday. All census takers will be trained in social distancing and will have personal protective equipment, according to the bureau. The Census Bureau plans to hire hundreds of thousands of census takers to knock on household doors for those who haven't answered the questionnaire. The Census Bureau on Friday also announced the schedule for other operations aimed at counting every person in the U.S. The 2020 census will help determine how many congressional seats each state gets as well as how $1.5 trillion in federal funding will be distributed.
