GARY BARTA

Big Ten could eliminate football divisions, reduce number of conference games

The future of the College Football Playoff could lead to major changes for the Big Ten. Iowa athletic director Gary Barta told The Athletic the conference could reduce the number of Big Ten games every year by one to eight in the 2023 season and said divisions could be eliminated. Elimination of divisions and a reduction in conference games would allow the Big Ten to schedule games against the Pac-12 and ACC after the three conferences in August announced an alliance. But we have had active conversations about the schedule beyond 2022.”The Big Ten has East and West divisions and plays nine conference games, including three divisional crossovers. Barta recently ended a three-year term on the College Football Playoff selection committee and was the chairman the last two seasons.

Why the College Football Playoff committee ranked Michigan ahead of Michigan State

“They’re ranked higher than Michigan State in just about every category,” he said. “That being said, the committee gave great credence to a Michigan State win head-to-head against Michigan.”More: Michigan moves ahead of MSU in new College Football Playoff rankingsHowever, that favorable impression appeared to only last five days. Michigan State defeated Michigan 37-33. The path is a bit more difficult for Michigan, which not only must win its remaining games — over Penn State, Maryland Ohio State — but get a Michigan State loss as well. Michigan travels to Penn State on Saturday (noon, ABC), while Michigan State hosts Maryland (4 p.m., FOX).

Michigan football’s playoff goal not dead yet

That means a sweep of the team’s remaining four games and some help elsewhere (think chaos in the Big Ten East) could grant Michigan its first-ever playoff berth. In fact, Michigan State’s 37-33 win over Michigan on Saturday appeared to have helped propel the Spartans into the No. More: Michigan State No. 7 in first College Football Playoff rankingsThose things bode well for Michigan and its CFP positioning during the final stretch of the season. One more trip up and Michigan will be unofficially eliminated, as no two-loss team has ever qualified for the playoff.
