Girl at center of Grand Rapids police controversy dies of coronavirus, family says
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A girl who was at the center of a major Grand Rapids police controversy three years ago has died after a two-week battle with coronavirus, family members have confirmed. Honestie Hodges, 14, tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 9, according to a GoFundMe page created by her grandmother, Alisa Niemeyer. Hodges’ mother, Whitney Hodges, did not respond to a request for comment by MLive. Hodges, her mother and another relative were just leaving their Grand Rapids home when they encountered police looking for one of their relatives in a stabbing. Her brief detainment led to written policy changes in how Grand Rapids police interact with children at scenes.
