CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Michigan State was shorthanded on the road as a big underdog against a ranked team. Being shorthanded on the road against a top 25 team was already a challenge and Michigan State got off to a poor start. After the first punt by Illinois, Michigan State put together its second straight scoring drive to take the lead. Punter Hugh Robertson booted the ball off a teammate and Michigan State took over the Illinois 29. The Fighting Illini were out of timeouts but Michigan State couldn’t run out the clock and failed to score.
