ANN ARBOR – Michigan Medicine has partnered with type 1 diabetes research nonprofit JDRF to establish the new JDRF Center of Excellence at the University of Michigan. The goal of the center, through U-M’s Elizabeth Weiser Caswell Diabetes Institute, is to accelerate research to cure type 1 diabetes and to improve lives. Ann Arbor resident Elizabeth Weiser Caswell and her father, Regent Ron Weiser, have made leadership gifts to kickstart the project. “Michigan Medicine is the ideal partner for JDRF,” Caswell said in a news release. “The JDRF Center of Excellence and the Elizabeth Weiser Caswell Diabetes Institute establishes us as one of the premier diabetes centers in the country—and the strongest in the Midwest,” Thomas Gardner, principal investigator of the JDRF Center of Excellence and EWCDI, said in a news release.

The JDRF One Walk is the largest fundraising programs in the world for Type 1 diabetes. Since 1992, the event has raised more than $1 billion for T1D research on how to prevent, delay and ultimately cure T1D. DETROIT - On Sept. 22, the JDRF Metro Detroit/South East Michigan Chapter kicks off its annual One Walk at the Detroit RiverWalk/Milliken State Park. Striving to raise more than $1 million to help fund critically needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, the event is expected to attract more than 4,000 supporters, including teams representing local businesses, families, schools and other organizations. "Each year more than 40,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the United States," explains Nikki Borges, JDRF Metro Detroit/South East Michigan Chapter executive director. Every participant and supporter of the JDRF One Walk helps us fund critical research that can lead to scientific breakthroughs and ultimately a cure."
