A block in downtown San Francisco has been renamed for acclaimed photojournalist Joe Rosenthal, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic photo of U.S. Marines raising the flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during WWII.

On Thursday, the Marine Corps announced that the Marine pictured on the far side of the flag pole, with only his helmet visible, is Cpl. The historians provided a considerable amount of new evidence, mostly dozens of previously private photographs, the Marine Corps said. After an investigation, the Marine Corps announced in 2016 that Navy hospital corpsman John Bradley was not one of the men in the photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal.
