JACKSON, MI -- Fire, smoke and water caused “extensive” damage to a small Jackson home Thursday afternoon, officials said. Crews from the Jackson Fire Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Hollywood Street at 3:44 p.m. March 9 for a report of smoke coming from a residential building. Though no flames were showing from the outside, a passerby or neighbor saw smoke leaking out of the windows and eaves of the house, said Cpt. The blaze was contained to a couple of rooms in the middle of the small house, though there was “extensive” smoke and water damage done to the interior of the building. Jackson Fire was assisted at the scene by the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety, Summit Township Fire Department and Jackson Community Ambulance.

JACKSON, MI -- A suspicious fire inside an abandoned building near downtown Jackson is under investigation, officials said. At about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, Jackson Fire Department crews responded to a potential structure fire in the area of S. East and E. Washington avenues near downtown Jackson. After investigating the area for a short time, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the interior of an abandoned building, Smith said. The fire was largely contained to the interior of the pole barn-like structure, Smith said, adding that no one was injured in this incident. Jackson Fire crews were assisted by the Summit Township Fire Department and the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.

JACKSON, MI -- A failure in the building’s heating and air system filled a Jackson Family Dollar store with smoke and a strong burning smell Friday morning, officials said. At about 7:38 a.m. Dec 9, crews from the Jackson Fire Department were called to the Family Dollar store at 805 Francis St. for a potential commercial building fire. Family Dollar employees had entered the building Friday morning to the strong smell of something burning and a “light haze” of smoke throughout the store, said Jackson Fire Department Cpt. Crews managed to shut off the malfunctioning unit and clear the building of smoke, Smith said. Jackson Fire crews were assisted by the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety, the Summit Township Fire Department and Consumer’s Energy.

JACKSON, MI - Fire crews in Jackson battled a blaze at a commercial building early Saturday morning, officials said. There were no injuries and the building appeared vacant, according to Captain Joe Smith of the Jackson Fire Department. While en route to the fire, crews received information that it was a commercial building that appeared to be vacant, according to Smith. Summit Township and the Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety were part of the initial response. The Jackson Community Ambulance was also on scene along with the Jackson Police Department for traffic control, Smith said.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI — A fire damaged four units in a residential building in Jackson and displaced all 11 residents on Sunday evening, officials said. Fire crews were dispatched to 1004 Greenwood Avenue at around 5 p.m. on Dec. 26 for a structure fire, said Captain Joe Smith of Jackson Fire Department. The residential building had two units upstairs and two units on the first floor, housing a total of 11 tenants, he added. A tenant initially saw smoke coming from the first floor prior to smoke alarms going off and called Jackson police, said Smith. Jackson Fire Department was assisted by Summit Township and Spring Arbor fire departments, Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety and Jackson Police Department.
