California reparations plan advances movement, advocates say
California took a big step this week toward becoming the first U.S. state to make some form of restitution a reality by tackling the divisive issue of which Black residents should be eligible to receive reparations for the atrocity and injustices of slavery and racism.
Biden backs studying reparations as Congress considers bill

Most Black Americans favored reparations, 74%, compared with 15% of white Americans. AdRep. Burgess Owens, a first-term Republican from Utah, argued against a reparations commission.
'Squad' member Rashida Tlaib wins primary in Michigan
LANSING, Mich. Squad member Rashida Tlaib won a challenge for her House seat in Michigans primary, in a rematch with the woman she narrowly defeated two years ago. Her opponent in Tuesday's primary was Detroit City Council President President Brenda Jones, who lost by 1 percentage point in 2018 when the primary field was larger. Jones on the same day defeated Tlaib to later fill out the remainder of John Conyers term. Andrew E. Bryant, 71, voted for Tlaib at New Providence Baptist Church on Detroits west side. "With Rashida Tlaib, Im probably not the best informed voter.The primary winner will be the overwhelming favorite in November's general election.
'Squad' member Tlaib may be vulnerable in tough primary
Now the Michigan Democrat is the squad's most vulnerable member, as she faces Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones in the Aug. 4 primary. In 2018, Jones finished a close second to Tlaib in a six-person primary for the seat long held by Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations. Folks are wanting someone to make their case in their own words, said Conyers, who also ran in the 2018 primary. Black, white, Hispanic, Martian, I dont care who is in power, just do what you say youre going to do, he said.
