Read full article: On this day: July 252003: Filmmaker John Schlesinger, the Oscar-winning director of "Midnight Cowboy," dies at age 77 in Palm Springs, California. He suffered a debilitating stroke in December 2000 and his condition had deteriorated significantly the weeks before his death. He was taken off life support the day before his death. Schlesinger was also known for directing movies such as "Daring," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Marathon Man" and "Pacific Heights." Hide Caption
