2003: Filmmaker John Schlesinger, the Oscar-winning director of "Midnight Cowboy," dies at age 77 in Palm Springs, California. He suffered a debilitating stroke in December 2000 and his condition had deteriorated significantly the weeks before his death. He was taken off life support the day before his death.
