David Perron’s hat trick lifts Red Wings past Penguins after Derek Lalonde ejected

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings experienced a tremendous start, a disastrous second period and an exhilarating finish Tuesday, which coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t able to witness from the bench. David Perron’s second goal of the game, on the power play, with 3:40 remaining in the third period snapped a tie. Perron then scored again for his ninth career hat trick and the Red Wings went on to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-4 at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings then issued an unsuccessful goalie interference challenging, leaving them shorthanded again. Red Wings’ depth results in competition, difficult lineup decisions

It shows the depth that’s contributed to a 7-1-0 run that’s propelled the Red Wings into a playoff spot. Raymond had a good practice Friday, but his status Saturday against Tampa Bay is uncertain (8 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit). “Hopefully we’ll have him for tomorrow.”The Red Wings need to clear a roster spot before activating Raymond. Jonatan Berggren latest Red Wings scratch due to crowded roster

Having more capable forwards than lineup spots is a nice luxury for a Detroit Red Wings team decimated by injuries much of the season. Coach Derek Lalonde said before the game that Filip Zadina, scratched in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory in Washington, is back in the lineup. “Really wanted to get Zadina back in because he played well previous to the scratch the other day,” Lalonde said. “Obviously, very happy with Berggren’s game,” Lalonde said. Expect to get him back in Saturday.”The Red Wings might have Raymond back when they host Tampa Bay on Saturday.

‘Johnny Burgers’ impresses Red Wings with skills, hockey sense

DETROIT – Dylan Larkin entered the interview room with Jonatan Berggren following the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-2 victory Saturday over Vancouver and revealed his new nickname for the rookie. “It’s good hockey sense,” Larkin said. “You watch a lot of the goals he’s scored this year; it’s finding soft spots on the ice where he’s not covered, and he’s got good hands around the net. He’s been fairly consistent, going no longer than four games without a point and registering a point in 19 games. “I’m feeling pretty good that I haven’t had so much downs in my games,” Berggren said.

Red Wings’ 2018 pick Jared McIsaac progressed in first full Griffins season

Surgery on both shoulders limited McIsaac to 28 games during his final junior season and 10 games in 2020-21, his first pro season with the Griffins. “For him to play a full season under hard circumstances in the American League, he learned to grind it out a little bit,” Griffins coach Ben Simon said. “He’s playing substantial minutes for our club -- power play, PK, end of game situations, game’s on the line situations. I think he’s leaving here with a positive attitude and knows what he has to do to be more successful next year.

Red Wings taking wait-and-see approach with Jonatan Berggren

Or maybe the Detroit Red Wings can fill that need from within the organization. Jonatan Berggren had a strong first season in North America with the Grand Rapids Griffins and looks NHL-ready. “I’m not going to pencil Jonatan Berggren into the lineup, but I’m also not going to say he’s destined to play in GR. “Jonatan came in as a new kid in a foreign country for the first time, adjusting to a different culture, a different city, a different coach, a different organization, and had a heck of a year. He worked extremely hard.”The Red Wings opted not to recall Berggren late in the season, believing it was best for his development to stay put.

Why Red Wings didn’t recall Jonatan Berggren this season

The Red Wings shuffled many forwards back and forth from Grand Rapids to Detroit this season, but Jonatan Berggren wasn’t one of them. Even with the Griffins eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, the Red Wings have opted not to recall Berggren for the final two games. They signed Turner Elson to an NHL contract for the rest of the season, and he will make his Red Wings debut tonight in Toronto (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit Extra). “Berggren’s had a good year down there,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “At the end of the day, the decision on Jonatan Berggren is a decision made on what’s best for his individual development.
