Haiti’s interim prime minister Claude Joseph will step down, a top official confirmed today. The move comes in the wake of the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, who was fatally shot when assailants armed with assault rifles stormed his private residence in the hills above Port-au-Prince. Elections minister Mathias Pierre said negotiations are still ongoing, but that Ariel Henry, who Mr Moise had designated to replace Mr Joseph a day before he was killed, will lead the country.

Opposition leaders are demanding Moïse’s resignation and legislative elections to restart a Parliament dissolved a year ago. They claim that Moïse’s five-year term is legally ending — that it began when former President Michel Martelly's term expired in February 2016. He also said the constitutional referendum won't give Moïse more power but said changes are needed to the 1987 document. François said he won't take part in the “circus act” of voting in the referendum or elections. “This is a country of corruption.”Moïse has faced numerous calls for resignation since taking office, with protests roiling Haiti since late 2017.

It was the latest unrest during more than a year of protests calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse over corruption charges. In February, police exchanged gunfire with Haitian soldiers outside the national palace where police were protesting working conditions. Earlier this year, a scathing United Nations report accused Haitian police of corruption and failing to protect the population.
Humanitarian crisis increases in Haiti as protests grip nation
Photos of the protests, which have been happening intermittently since February, have shown people burning car tires and clashing with police in Port-au-Prince. The United Nations reported Wednesday its humanitarian efforts have been impacted by the protests, affecting access to medical care and causing fuel shortages and lack of safe water. Despite reports there have been casualties in clashes over the past few weeks, Haitian officials have yet to comment. The "mega protest" Haitians have titled "Mobilizasyon san Limit," or "Unlimited Mobilization," is expected to begin around 10 a.m. Journalist Etant Dupain reported from Port-au-Prince and CNN's Jackie Castillo, Taylor Barnes and Chandler Thornton reported and wrote in Atlanta.
