Julio Teheran pitched the Detroit Tigers to a victory over Cleveland in the second game of the 2021 season. It was his first and only start for the Tigers and the last time he stepped on a big-league mound. Teheran, who turns 32 in January, has signed a minor-league deal with the San Diego Padres. After an unsuccessful stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Teheran signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers. Unable to find another big-league opportunity in 2022, Teheran had stints with an indy league team in Staten Island, N.Y., plus two Mexican League teams.

Julio Teheran’s 2021 debut in a Tigers uniform provided hope the veteran pitcher could revive his career in Detroit. Prior to his brief stint with the Tigers, Teheran was a two-time all-star during a nine-year run in Atlanta, where he was the opening-day starter for six consecutive seasons, joining Warren Spahn as the only Braves pitchers to achieve that feat. For his career, Teheran boasts a 78-77 record with a 3.80 earned-run average and a 1.22 WHIP with 1,207 strikeouts against 477 walks in nearly 1,400 innings of work. By signing with Tijuana, Teheran joins a group of former MLB all-stars to compete in the Mexican League this summer, including Pablo Sandoval (Monclova), Bartolo Colon (Monclova), Jair Jurrgens (Oaxaca) and Yasiel Puig (Veracruz). The Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League announced its signing of 31-year-old Teheran on Thursday morning. That evening, the former Detroit Tigers pitcher became the first starter in FerryHawks’ history. He finished the 2014 season with a 2.89 ERA, 1.081 WHIP and a career-high 186 strikeouts in 221.0 innings. He finished the season with a 14-13 record in 33 starts. He was an all-star again in 2016 and finished that season with a 7-10 record, a 3.21 ERA and a career-best 1.053 WHIP.

Across Major League Baseball, 160 players became free agents on Wednesday, one day after the conclusion of the World Series. None of the newly minted free agents will be able to sign with another team for five days. He is unlikely to get an MLB deal this winter. Another several dozen players -- including a handful of Tigers -- are likely to become free agents after being non-tendered later this month. The list is provided by the MLB Players Association.

What happened next was frustratingly familiar for the Tigers: Teheran made exactly one start before coming down with a shoulder injury. The Tigers will almost certainly be back in that same market yet again this winter, looking to add at least one free-agent pitcher. Five prominent free-agent starters signed for about that amount last winter:The Blue Jays scored big this year with lefty Robbie Ray, a Cy Young candidate in 2021. DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have 11 players on the injured list, four of whom should be back fairly soon and four more who are likely to be back in September. That’s where it gets fairly complicated, as the Tigers don’t have space for eight players right now. The Tigers can also extend rehab outings to their maximum length while deciding what to do. Outfielder Akil Baddoo (concussion) will be eligible to come off the 7-day concussion injured list on Wednesday. He had very low velocity during a recent live BP session in Lakeland and the Tigers aren’t comfortable sending him on a rehab assignment.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Victor Reyes was reinstated from the injured list on Thursday and then optioned to Triple-A Toledo, where he had been on a rehab assignment. The 26-year-old outfielder made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster but struggled mightily and was sent to Toledo. He had been on the injured list since June 15. Injuries are piling up across baseball, and the Detroit Tigers are no exception. Eight players on the 40-man roster are currently on the injured list in the major or minor leagues. DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have released right-handed pitcher Franklin Perez, the centerpiece of the Justin Verlander trade who was once considered the organization’s top prospect. The move to formally place Perez on release waivers comes one day after the team announced that Perez would undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The Tigers’ needed Perez’s roster spot to add catcher Eric Haase to the 40-man roster. The Tigers selected Haase’s contract from Triple-A Toledo to replace Grayson Greiner, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. CLEVELAND -- Michael Fulmer’s weeklong stint as the best reliever in the Detroit Tigers’ bullpen has earned him a ticket back to the starting rotation. Unfortunately, it will come at the expense of veteran Julio Teheran, who is being shut down after suffering a shoulder injury Friday night. The Tigers placed Teheran on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right shoulder strain. Hinch gave no specific timeline for Teheran’s return, but said the 30-year-old right-hander would miss a significant amount of time. At that point, the Tigers could go to a six-man rotation, something they’ve discussed, or bump someone else to the bullpen.

The Tigers said the decision to scratch Teheran was made as a “precaution.”The bullpen is well-rested after an off-day on Thursday. Teheran pitched well in his first start of the season against the Indians on April 3. The Tigers signed him to a minor-league contract and he won the job with a strong performance this spring. The Indians scored three runs off Holland in the bottom of the first, including a two-run homer by Franmil Reyes.

It’s prediction season and, as you might expect, most of the projections (whether by computers or humans) aren’t terribly optimistic about the Detroit Tigers. But reality will hit soon, and if things go bad for the Tigers, they could go really bad. Teheran opted for an NRI deal with the Tigers over a guaranteed deal elsewhere because he got a base of $3M plus $1M in games started incentives. ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Los Angeles Angels fired general manager Billy Eppler on Sunday after the long-struggling franchise finished its fifth consecutive losing season under his watch. But Eppler was dismissed when the Angels couldn't even make the eight-team AL playoff field this month. “Billy and I really, I thought, were great together,” Maddon said after the Angels ended their season with a 5-0 loss to the Dodgers. Eppler's Angels went 332-376 (.469) under three managers with a rotating cast of supporting players around Trout and Pujols.
