Michigan men charged in Capitol riot cut plea deals in exchange for cooperation with authorities

Five Michigan men accepted plea deals with federal prosecutors, admitting their participation in a riot at the U.S Capitol in exchange for having other charges dropped. Only two men, Dresch and Sorvisto, have been sentenced as of Dec. 23. Three other charges against him were dropped, including disorderly conduct on restricted grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and entering a restricted building. Herendeen was previously convicted of domestic assault, disorderly conduct and operating while impaired twice between 1995 and 2013. Schornak was convicted of disorderly conduct in 2003 and operating while intoxicated in 2001.

A federal judge on Wednesday assailed the false claims of election fraud pushed by former President Donald Trump and his supporters as she sentenced a member of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to time served, saying the Michigan man “placed his trust in someone who repaid that trust by lying to him.” U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson told Karl Dresch, a Calumet resident in the Upper Peninsula, that he was an “enthusiastic participant” in an effort to subvert the will of the voters. Dresch, who has been locked up since his arrest in January, is being released from jail since he already served the six-month maximum sentence for the misdemeanor offense.

Nearly 16 years prior, in March 2005, his father, Stephen Dresch, helped the FBI thwart a potential terrorist attack linked to anti-government Oklahoma City bomber and Lapeer native Terry Nichols. Scarpa Jr. and Nichols were both serving federal prison sentences in Colorado, Scarpa Jr. for conspiracy to murder and drug trafficking. Accused Capitol rioter from Michigan’s UP expressed anti-government sentiments on social media

While his father’s outspoken nature earned him praise and admiration, it’s done the opposite for Karl Dresch. Karl Dresch “likes to give his opinion, whether other people want to hear it or not,” he said. A review of this Facebook activity revealed Karl Dresch first mentioned the Jan. 6 certification date in social media posts dated Dec. 16. He said Karl Dresch doesn’t pose a significant risk to the public and “absolutely” should have received bond. The felonies were dismissed as part of a plea deal, but Karl Dresch spent a year in jail, according to court records.

Shelby Township man is 3rd from Michigan charged in connection with US Capitol attack

On Thursday, a Shelby Township man became the third person from Michigan to be charged in connection with the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. According to court documents, the FBI received a tip that Mels was at the Capitol during the attack. A grand jury for U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia late last week handed down a five-count indictment.
