Tigers make flurry of moves to set Opening Day roster
The Detroit Tigers set their Opening Day roster on Wednesday with a series of moves, the most significant of which involved an injury to reliable veteran reliever Jose Cisnero. Cisnero was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain although he had pitched in spring training as recently as Sunday. To accommodate the addition of Torkelson, Vest, Hutchison and Barnes to the 40-man roster, the Tigers place three players on the 60-day injured list. * On the 10-day injured list. Two late-arriving pitchers -- Michael Pineda and Wily Peralta -- are getting work in Toledo and Lakeland, respectively.

mlive.comTigers’ run-scoring woes continue in 3-2 loss to Twins

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have sent struggling infielder Willi Castro and cut ties -- likely permanently -- with veteran outfielder Nomar Mazara. The two moves came just hours before the Tigers were set to open the second half of the season with a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park. To fill the two spots on the roster, the Tigers have recalled infielder Isaac Paredes and outfielder Derek Hill from Triple-A Toledo. Castro, 24, was perhaps the Tigers’ best hitter during a shortened 2020 season, posting a .349 average and .932 OPS in 140 plate appearances. mlive.comTwo months after almost making Tigers debut, Erasmo Ramirez back in Detroit
Erasmo Ramirez is back in Detroit, and hopefully he’ll get to pitch this time. The Tigers activated the veteran right-hander from the injured list on Friday. Ramirez takes the spot of left-hander Miguel Del Pozo, who was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Wednesday’s doubleheader in Cleveland. Ramirez had just been called up from Triple-A Toledo and was warming up to enter a game on May 7 when he suffered a right pectoralis strain. He’s spent nearly two months on the injured list, but looked sharp in two rehab appearances with Toledo.
mlive.comTigers notes: Journeyman lefty getting chance, Derek Hill back up as 27th man
DETROIT -- Miguel Del Pozo’s career trajectory is like that of many minor-league players who are on the cusp of the big leagues, but not quite in the big leagues. There’s one long stretch with the original club -- in Del Pozo’s case, the Miami Marlins -- followed by several brief tenures and fleeting opportunities with a succession of other clubs. In Del Pozo’s case, that has meant short stints with the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates and, now, the Detroit Tigers. “The toughest part is remembering all the names,” Del Pozo joked in an interview outside the visitor’s dugout at Progressive Field on Monday night. Del Pozo gave up a couple of runs on three hits.

Left-handed pitcher Miguel Del Pozo’s roughly 24-hour stint as a member of the Detroit Tigers active roster came to an end without him throwing a single pitch. Del Pozo was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Wednesday’s game so the Tigers could promote rookie Matt Manning to start on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels. Manning, 23, was selected by the Tigers in the first round (9th overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft. Manning got off to a slow start in Toledo, posting an 8.07 ERA in 32 1/3 innings. Soto’s club, Águilas Cibaeñas, defeated the Gigantes del Cibao Monday night in Game 7 of the championship series. The Águilas fought back from a 3-1 deficit to win their 22nd Dominican league title.
