Michigan State men’s basketball will face Alabama, led by head coach Nate Oats, a former Michigan high school coach, in the first round of the Phil Knight Invitational on Nov. 25 in Portland, Oregon. Michigan State and Alabama have met twice previously, most recently in 1998. Oats and Pitino will walk the same sideline Saturday in the college basketball shrine of Hinkle Fieldhouse as Oats coaches in his fourth NCAA tournament. Ahead of the 2005 NCAA tournament, Oats mentioned brackets and Selection Sunday to his students and was met with blank stares. Sixteen years later, Oats’ math class curriculum has become real life.
