Nearly $500,000 in federal funding will pay for restoration of celery ponds -- former celery fields -- that are part of Mona Lake's watershed.

The residence, in the 2800 block of Sheffield Street, has been declared unfit for occupancy, police said. “An anonymous complainant was able to obtain photos of the deplorable living conditions the dogs were subjected to,” police said. Police said that many of the dogs were in poor health and suffered from distemper, creating “a significant health hazard to animals” in the community. The 78 dogs were seized and taken to Pound Buddies for evaluation and temporary placement.

A caller then said the woman was walking toward U.S. 31 from Sternberg. In exchange, Muskegon County prosecutors dismissed charges of open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm. A sentencing date has not been set, Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Tim Maat confirmed with MLive/Muskegon Chronicle. The Norton Shores City Council recently approved an amendment to the special use permit for the planned unit development that had been granted for Livingstone Development LLC. La Colombe Coffee Roasters, a Pennsylvania-based company, first established a production facility in Norton Shores in 2016. Now, it’s moving into another 50,000 square feet at the Pontaluna building, and has plans for a third, 100,000-square-foot building that also is in Norton Shores, said Norton Shores City Administrator Mark Meyers. The expansion will include the addition of 55 full-time employees, according to information provided to the city by La Colombe. The Norton Shores City Council in 2019 transferred a tax exemption to La Colombe for its then-new production space on Pontaluna. The $1.3 million industrial facility tax exemption had originally been granted to Hemisphere Design Works.

WEST MICHIGAN -- A 7-year-old boy, a teen and an adult all drowned in turbulent Lake Michigan waters in separate incidents only minutes apart but in two counties. Further north, in Ottawa County’s Ferrysburg, a 16-year-old Norton Shores boy died at North Beach Park about 7:50 p.m. In South Haven, rescuers responded to a report of several people struggling in the water. Rescuers began CPR and rushed the boy to Bronson hospital in South Haven, but he was pronounced dead. A search for the Ohio man will resume when lake conditions improve, South Haven police said.

The male teen “appeared to be extremely malnourished and there was evidence of abuse,” police said in the press release. The 43-year-old woman was arrested and lodged at the Muskegon County Jail and was to be arraigned for open murder, police said. MUSKEGON, MI – A large apartment complex planned for a wooded area of southern Norton Shores is designed in part to meet the needs of older residents, according to the developer. The 140-unit complex is planned for 21 wooded acres south of Judson Road and west of Grand Haven Road. The complex, tentatively called Eight 15 Apartments, is being developed by Smith Development of Spring Lake. The Norton Shores City Council on May 17 approved a special use permit allowing for construction of the high-density project in an area zoned planned unit residential development. “This development would provide more housing to Norton Shores residents, especially in an area that has never seen residential development of this scale,” Norton Shores Planning and Zoning Administrator Ted Woodcock wrote in a memo to the city’s planning commissioners.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A former Art Van Furniture store in Norton Shores is expected to be converted to a hardware and construction equipment rental business. Equipment Share recently was granted a special use permit from the Norton Shores City Council after an earlier proposal didn’t pass muster. Art Van filed for bankruptcy in March 2020 and Loves Furniture acquired the assets of 27 of its stores, including the Norton Shores location. It focuses on serving construction contractors, providing them construction equipment rental sales and tracking services. The company’s proposal was approved after it dropped plans to lease heavy construction equipment, instead keeping leased equipment to a size that can be transported in a pickup truck.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A $3.2 million grant will pay to make municipal water available to 76 homes impacted by PFAS contamination in Muskegon County. The homes in the city of Norton Shores are near the Muskegon County Airport, where the use of firefighting foam contaminated water wells with the “forever” chemicals. In those cases, and unlike the upcoming work, water mains were already in the vicinity of the impacted homes. He praised officials with EGLE who he said searched out funding to help Norton Shores extend the water mains. “They are working hard on behalf of our residents who are affected by PFAS,” Meyers said.

MUSKEGON, MI -- Georgia authorities say they working to get the remains of a Norton Shores woman exhumed and sent back to Michigan after she was recently identified as a 1988 homicide victim. Montgomery took part in a Thursday, March 24 press conference to announced they had identified the 1988 victim as Stacey Lyn Chahorski, who went missing in late 1988 at age 19. Her body was discovered Dec. 16, 1988 by Georgia Department of Transportation workers in a lane of I-59 about five miles from the Alabama state line. Development of the cemetery comes as the 5,258 grave sites at Norton Cemetery, located on Airport Road, are selling out. The city sells about 50 plots per year, according to Norton Shores City Manager Mark Meyers. The cemetery entrance will feature an archway similar to the one at Norton Cemetery and the main road in will be tree-lined, officials said. The entire cemetery would accommodate 3,240 burial spots and 216 cremains spots in the columbarium, Murphy said. Officials were looking for a location near the Norton Cemetery, which is about 2 miles from the Ellis Road site.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A man acted in self-defense when he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend at a Norton Shores bar, his attorney said. Kyle Dekker Robbins, 40, was blindsided by Andre Willie Garner, 27, and was being punched and choked when he reached for his gun and shot Garner, defense attorney Terry Nolan said. A prosecutor said that Robbins sent a threatening text message to his former girlfriend after the shooting. Nolan said that his client shot Garner in the side, then fired two other gunshots after Garner dropped to the floor.

They’ll face a red-hot Western Michigan Christian (4-2) squad later this week as they hope to continue to build into a conference championship contender. They’ll face Whitehall (3-7), Montague (7-2) and Muskegon Catholic (3-3) later this week.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A man wanted in a fatal shooting at a Norton Shores bar turned himself in early Tuesday, Dec. 21, police said. Kyle Decker Robbins, 40, called 911 from the park-and-ride lot at Harvey Street and East Hile Road to turn himself in. He is charged with open murder in the Dec. 16 shooting death of Andre Willie Garner, 27, of Muskegon, at MI Bar on West Sherman Boulevard. The two got into a fist fight near the bar area before Robbins allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Garner, who died at the scene. He was shot and killed around 1:25 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at MI Bar, Norton Shores police said. The suspect walked away from the bar, on West Sherman Boulevard, after the shooting. MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A 27-year-old Muskegon man was shot and killed early Thursday, Dec. 16, at MI Bar on West Sherman Boulevard in Norton Shores. Witnesses told Norton Shores police that the victim and gunman knew each other. They were engaged in a fist fight in the bar area before the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the other man several times, police said. Police said that several witnesses who were in the bar at the when the shooting occurred left before police reached the scene. MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – An 18-year-old Norton Shores man was shot and killed early Wednesday, Dec. 9, in the Village of Fruitport. Police responded to a 2:54 a.m. report of a person shot near Park Street and South Third Avenue. Police found the victim inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds. The shooting stemmed from “prior conflicts” between the victim and suspect, police said. The suspect is held in the Muskegon County Jail.
