Shawn Horcoff named Red Wings assistant general manager and Griffins GM

Shawn Horcoff has been named Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager and GM of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Horcoff, 43, spent six seasons as Red Wings director of player development -- in addition to the past three seasons as assistant director of player personnel. Horcoff will work alongside GM Steve Yzerman on all hockey operations matters for the Red Wings, in addition to being responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Griffins, including personnel decisions, contract negotiations and player movement. “I’m very excited for my new role with the Red Wings and look forward to continuing the winning culture and tradition in Grand Rapids,” Horcoff said in a statement. As director of player development, Horcoff oversaw and evaluated Detroit’s prospects at the junior and collegiate level as well as Europe.

Jim Nill of Dallas was a Red Wings executive for 19 years, including assistant GM from 1998 to 2013 before the Stars hired him. Red Wings assistant GM Pat Verbeek to reportedly become Ducks general manager

Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager Pat Verbeek is set to be named the new general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. He replaced Ryan Martin, who joined the New York Rangers as assistant GM, and was a candidate for the Ducks general manager job as well. Verbeek returned to the Red Wings shortly after Steve Yzerman become the club’s general manager in April 2019. A former player and pro scout with the Red Wings, Verbeek left in 2010 to join Yzerman with the Tampa Bay Lightning, earned an assistant GM position. Bob Murray resigned as Anaheim’s executive vice president and general manager in November following an investigation into his professional conduct.

The Detroit Red Wings will not hire a replacement for Ryan Martin, opting to expand Pat Verbeek’s role. The club announced Thursday that Verbeek will assume general manager duties for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins while also continuing his role as Red Wings assistant GM. In his expanded role with the Griffins, Verbeek will be responsible for the team’s day-to-day operations, including personnel decisions, contract negotiations and player movement. “The Griffins are a first-class organization, and Grand Rapids is a fantastic market for hockey,” Verbeek said in a statement. “His experience and proven hockey acumen put us in a prime position to continue fielding competitive hockey teams now and into the future.”More: Red Wings to buy out veteran center

UPDATE: Red Wings officially hire Pat Verbeek as assistant general managerThat's according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, who reported on his podcast that Verbeek, who was Yzerman's assistant general manager in Tampa, will follow his boss to the Red Wings to do the same job. Verbeek played two seasons with the Red Wings from 1999 to 2001. Verbeek then did some broadcasting for the Red Wings before becoming a pro scout for the team. Months later, the Red Wings announced Yzerman is the team's new general manager.

Verbeek will serve alongside current assistant general manager Ryan Martin under new GM Steve Yzerman in the Red Wings' front office. "I'm very excited to return to the Red Wings," Verbeek said. The announcement comes after longtime Red Wings general manager Ken Holland reportedly accepted the same position with the Edmonton Oilers. Verbeek was promoted to assistant general manager and director of player personnel two years later.
