City of Ann Arbor officials announced on Wednesday that the overflow was caused by a sewer pipe blockage made up of gravel and dirt from a collapsed sewer pipe.

A “root ball” blocked a pipe causing an estimated 600 gallons of sanitary sewage to overflow in part of the Nichols Arboretum.

No sewage reached any storm sewer or watercourse.
