In May, the organization estimated 90% of independent venues nationwide could close down permanently due to COVID-19. There are more than 80 Michigan venues that are a part of NIVA, most are in Metro Detroit. These independent venues asked the federal government for assistance and didn’t receive any. NIVA said it needs about $10 million for the more than 80 independent venues across the state to stay afloat.
