WNBA honors its top 25 players all-time
The WNBA honored its past and present when it announced the league's top 25 players Sunday. The “W25” has 10 current players, including Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker and Breanna Stewart. Former stars Lisa Leslie, Tamika Catchings, Katie Smith and Sheryl Swoopes are among 15 retired players selected by a panel of media members and women's basketball pioneers and advocates.news.yahoo.com
Summer of Women: Females stole the show at 1996 Olympics
It remains the biggest jump at a single Olympics in the number of women competitors. Both wound up being two of the most popular sports at the Atlanta Games. On the other side of that curtain, the U.S. captured its first team gold medal in women's gymnastics with a group that became known as the Magnificent Seven. Then, for the gold medal game, I heard they were scalping tickets. You had some of the biggest, tallest women in the Olympics, and some of the shortest women in the Olympics going by each other.All of them stood tall in Atlanta.
WNBA suspends LA Sparks' Riquna Williams
1996: The creation of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is announced at a press conference with Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes in attendance. Riquna Williams is suspended for 10 games, according to a statement on the WNBA's website. The Womens' National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) said it disagrees with the suspension and is filing a grievance. We will provide whatever resources we are allowed to help Riquna learn and grow from this unfortunate situation," the LA Sparks said in a statement. Williams has been with the Sparks since 2016 after playing four seasons with the Tulsa Shock.
