Longtime Tigers farmhand returns to big league lineup with the Baltimore Orioles
After getting his first opportunity to start in the majors last season in Baltimore, Spenser Watkins is getting another chance with the Orioles. After spending years at various levels within the Detroit Tigers’ minor league system, Watkins signed a minor league contract with the Orioles on Feb. 2, 2021 and started 10 games for them last season. After being outrighted off the 40-man roster in November last year, the Orioles announced on Monday that they selected the Watkins’ contract. The righthander was drafted by the Tigers in the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft but never made it to the big leagues with the organization. The 29-year-old Watkins has a 3.86 ERA in 625 1/3 innings at the minor league level, yet he was hammered for 49 runs in just 54 2/3 innings last year with the Orioles, which led to an 8.07 ERA.mlive.com
