Ever since Steve Yzerman took over as the Detroit Red Wings general manager nearly four years ago, he has seemingly had a direct line to Doug Armstrong, his St. Louis counterpart. Yzerman has made four trades with St. Louis and signed a free agent from the Blues, and those players have made a significant impact. Some of them return to St. Louis tonight when the Red Wings visit the Blues (8 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit). But at the same time, it would be a lot sweeter going into St. Louis and getting a win. The Detroit Red Wings’ fleeting playoff hopes were dealt a massive blow this weekend. The Philadelphia Flyers scored twice in the second period Sunday to take the lead and defeated the Red Wings 3-1 at Wells Fargo Center. The Red Wings (28-26-9) are winless in six (0-5-1), equaling their season-long drought from Dec. 8-19 (0-4-2). He stopped 34 shots but didn’t get much offensive support from a team that’s scored twice in the past two games. The Flyers, with the NHL’s worst power play, did not convert, but it was that much less time for the Red Wings to mount an attack.

Magnus Hellberg stopped all 25 shots he faced through two periods Saturday, but the New York Islanders scored four unanswered goals in the third period and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 at UBS Arena. The Red Wings (28-25-8) are winless in five (0-4-1) as their playoff hopes continue to dwindle. The Detroit Red Wings finally are gaining traction, at the expense of Western Canada clubs. Ville Husso made 41 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped 4-of-5 shooters in the shootout Wednesday as the Red Wings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 at Rogers Place. The Red Wings (25-20-8) equaled their season-high four-game winning streak from Nov. 17-25. The Oilers outshot the Red Wings 33-14 in the second and third periods combined. The Vegas Golden Knights capitalized on a couple of defensive breakdowns and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 Saturday at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings (11-7-5) have dropped three in a row (0-2-1) after winning the first two games of the season-long five-game homestand. The Red Wings, who failed to score in 10 power-play opportunities the previous two games, went back on the man-advantage less than three minutes later. The Red Wings played catchup nearly the entire night, after Jack Eichel scored 1:05 into the game. Jonathan Marchessault made it 2-0 on the power play at 7:50 of the second, capping a quick transition after the Red Wings had possession deep in the offensive zone.
