Tenants of a building at Sturtevant and Lawton on Detroit’s west side must vacate by Wednesday after city officials deemed the structure unsafe.

There is a big push to ensure that landlords in Detroit are aware of compliance.

About a week ago, Local 4 brought you the story of a man who doesn’t feel safe going out into his own backyard because he doesn’t know what might be living in the overgrown yard next door. It’s a vacant home, and finding the owner hasn’t been easy.

One man says he’s been calling the city and officials about this problem property, and Wednesday night, Local 4 is helping him get answers.

DETROIT – A Detroit man went to the Local 4 Defenders for help because his neighbor was dumping raw sewage in their backyard. Chavone Demham admitted to dumping the sewage and told the city that she was in need of help. “It’s a program called Code Blue,” Bowser said. AdIn a typical year, Code Blue helps about 30 families. While the assistance directly helps Demham, it also helps all of the neighbors living on Birwood Street.

DETROIT – A local man said city officials wouldn’t help when he complained about his neighbor dumping raw sewage into the back yard. Something needs to be done about that sewage leaking into the backyard,” Scott said. Within hours of the Defenders contacting the city, an inspector -- along with Detroit police officers -- arrived to address the problem. The city said if the pumping of sewage does not stop immediately, they will be fined $500.
