Officials received calls about a man walking north in the southbound lanes of I-75. While Michigan State Police troopers were on their way, they learned that a man had been hit by a car.

The driver who struck the 35-year-old man told police that she had been heading south on I-75 when someone ran across the freeway in front of her, and she couldn’t stop in time.

Troopers found the man lying in the roadway. They tried to give him first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters.

“At this time, we don’t know why the pedestrian was on the freeway,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “We want to remind the community that it is never a good idea to walk along the freeway, and in fact, it is illegal.”

Police closed the freeway to investigate. It has since reopened.

The investigation continues as police wait on the medical examiner’s report.
