Heart of Detroit: Kids find joy in free books from Birdie's Bookmobile
Alyce Hartman, driven by her passion for reading, started Birdie’s Bookmobile to provide books to children in metro Detroit. Despite setbacks, including a fire and theft of the bus, Hartman adapted by organizing monthly mini book fairs, where children can choose books for free. Through partnerships with schools and nonprofits, her efforts have doubled the number of books gifted. Hartman aspires to resume the bookmobile service, continuing to bring joy and literacy to the community.
