Hacks to preserve your pumpkins: Do they work?

Some "hacks" to preserve a carved pumpkin have been circulating the internet, including using petroleum jelly, or a bleach-water mix, or WD-40. We tested all three options to see which ones work and which don't. It should be noted that these are chemicals, and could pose a harm to any wildlife in your area that may eat the pumpkins. A more natural hack that's safe on the animals? Some say coating a carved pumpkin in vinegar does a great job at preservation.
